What does it take to bring a coastal bay back to life?
Scientific knowledge and effective solutions are essential, but so are the people who care about the place and want to make a difference. Our Restoration Guöviken project in Blekinge, Sweden, brings all these elements together.
For more than a decade, Guöviken has struggled with deteriorating water quality, widespread algal growth and declining marine life. Concerned residents have long pushed for change, even forming the local association Rädda Guöviken (Save Guöviken). Today, we are joining forces with them and Karlshamn Municipality to find solutions that can help restore the bay.
The last week in October, we visited Guöviken together with environmental consultants from WRS, representatives from Rädda Guöviken and the water and fisheries manager from nearby Eriksberg Hotel & Nature Reserve. We explored the area, exchanged knowledge and discussed nutrient inflows and potential locations for restoration measures. Seeing the level of local engagement and hearing about the work already happening in the area was truly inspiring!
And the scientific work is taking shape! We are currently mapping nutrient sources from surrounding land, and early next year we will begin monitoring water and sediment quality to better understand internal nutrient loading and water exchange with the Baltic Sea. These findings will help us develop a digital model and identify the most promising restoration measures.
What makes Guöviken special is that the commitment to a healthier bay was there long before our project began. With such engaged local partners, there is a strong foundation for the work to grow and continue, while the lessons learned can inspire restoration efforts elsewhere in the Baltic Sea region.
The project is supported by LOVA (Lokala vattenvårdsprojekt), alongside contributions from Ålandsbanken's Baltic Sea Project and Mellby Gård AB.
