Port: updated prevention cover in terminals

In Q3 2023, we've made notable progress in designing our new, strengthened prevention cover and identified new terminals interested in partnering with Race For The Baltic. As a result of the ongoing collaborations within the project we have also identified a new potential phosphorus source to the Baltic Sea, arising from increased grain handling activities in Polish ports.

Updated version of the prevention cover
In response to recommendations from one of the terminals in Gdansk, which has successfully implemented our prevention cover, we have developed a sturdier version that will now be installed in all terminals involved in handling bulk materials containing phosphorus.

New terminal onboard
We have moved closer to finalizing agreements for both prevention covers and cleaning machine extensions at one of the phosphate fertilizer handling terminals in northwestern Poland. This will result in a substantial reduction of phosphorus reaching the waters of the Baltic Sea.

New phosphorus source to the Baltic Sea from ports identified
In Q3 2023, we discovered that the increased grain handling activities in Polish ports, particularly in Gdynia and Gdansk, could pose a significant source of phosphorus to the Baltic Sea waters. Grain dust generated during grain handling contains crop residues, soil particles, and traces of fertilizers. The estimated 15 million tons of grain to be handled in Polish ports in 2023 could potentially result in 200 tons of phosphorus leaked into the Baltic Sea.
