Expanding the project in Poland and advising HELCOM

Julia Gerlach presenting BAT/BEP at HELCOM.

Since our latest newsletter, the Port Project has broadened its presence in Poland, and we have been travelling west on the polish coastline to spread our knowledge to yet unexplored ports for our project. Race For The Baltic has also been asked to advise in HELCOM's document on BAP\BET on how to minimize nutrient losses from dry bulk fertilizer storage and handling in ports in the Baltic Sea together with John Nurminen Foundation and Coalition Clean Baltic.

Our travelling west on the polish coastline has resulted in great meetings informing about our organization, the issue of eutrophication, possible solutions and potential cooperation going forward with terminals operating in the area.

Presenting in HELCOM with workshop as next step
All of the hard work being done in the Port Project, has resulted in Race For The Baltic being asked to advise in HELCOMS document on BAT\BEP on how to minimize nutrient losses from dry bulk fertilizer storage and handling in ports in the Baltic Sea together with John Nurminen Foundation and Coalition Clean Baltic. We also presented the BAT/BEP on HELCOM’s informal Consultations of Maritime Working Group in front of contracting members. After proposing a workshop on the issue where authority and the industry could participate, this idea was endorsed by HELCOM and will be the next step moving forward.

Baltic Port Conference
Furthermore, in September this fall we participated in Baltic Port Conference in Gdynia. Ports around the Baltic Sea gathered to discuss current topics and we at Race For The Baltic spread information about the issues with nutrient losses when handling fertilizer ports. Our information was well received, and a lot of connections were made for future potential projects.
