Baltic Sea Day: Crown Princess visits mussel farm

On Baltic Sea Day, Race For The Baltic and Ecopelag welcomed H.R.H. The Crown Princess to a mussel farm in Jungfrufjärden in the Stockholm archipelago to showcase how nature-based solutions can contribute to a healthier Baltic Sea.

The visit highlighted how mussel farming can contribute to reducing eutrophication and creating a more circular approach to nutrient management. Mussels grow by filtering nutrients already present in the sea and require no feed, fertilisers or freshwater. As they filter the water, they capture nitrogen and phosphorus, which are removed from the marine environment when the mussels are harvested.

In this way, nutrients that contribute to eutrophication can be brought back from sea to land and become a resource for food and feed.

Nature-based solutions are an important complement to reducing nutrient inputs at the source. By combining prevention, restoration and circular approaches, we can accelerate the transition towards a healthier and more resilient Baltic Sea.
