Reed: launch of reed innovation project  & new product development

RFTB and Apotea are aiming high with new reed innovation project launched during 2025. During the spring new product samples of reed-based biocomposites have been developed together with Arcada University of Applied Sciences and Trifilon, with promising results. During the month of June, a intensive session on reed ecology and sustainable harvesting was held, together with a group of hand-picked experts. Also RFTB participated in seminar for Accenture´s employees, discussing Baltic Sea challenges and solutions, together with John Nurminen Foundation and experts from Accenture.

Reed Innovation with Apotea
Apotea and RFTB are launching a new reed innovation initiative supporting harvesting and product development – the aim is to enhance the ongoing work in creating sustainable business opportunities combined with the many environmental benefits of reed harvesting.

Reed Biocomposites
Together with Arcada University of Applied Sciences and Trifilon (a company specializing in producing sustainable materials) RFTB is exploring reed-based composites as sustainable alternatives to plastic materials. The first sample material was displayed at the annual fair Plastteknik Nordic, and continued collaboration is planned for commercialization. This is a good example of combining research and product development to explore new circular solutions.

Ecological Guidelines Reed Harvesting
Together with BalticReed project partners Ålands Government and County Administration Board Östergötland, RFTB gathered a group of experts from Sweden and Åland with mixed background and experience – researchers, municipalities, regional authorities, entrepreneurs and landowners – to discuss reed ecosystems and sustainable harvesting methods. This work will continue and be part of a wider document “Sustainable Guidelines for Reed Harvesting”.

Accenture Season if Impact
As part of Accenture Nordic´s “Season of Impact” – an internal sustainability initiative designed to provide employees with events focused on sustainability – RFTB participated in a breakfast seminar and panel discussion, together with John Nurminen Foundation. Creative discussions were held on how to engage and support the improvement of the Baltic Sea health, as individuals and as organizations.
