Scientific project dialogues

Race For The Baltic had a pleasure to participate in Baltic Sea Science Congress that took place in Sopot, Poland. The Baltic Sea Science Congress is a biennial international forum addressing a broad interdisciplinary spectrum of Baltic Sea research. The congress brings together scientists working on issues related to the Baltic Sea Region to present the most recent research and to discuss status, trends and the future of the Baltic Sea as well as future research needs. For us it was an occasion to meet the most prominent scientists that dedicate their scientific expertise to research the Baltic Sea.

We explored exciting opportunities for new projects in partnership with leading research institutions, including the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography at the University of Gdańsk, the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute in Gdynia, Stockholm University, and Aarhus University.

Our discussions focused on key challenges and emerging solutions for the Baltic Sea, including:

  • The potential of seagrass replanting to support carbon dioxide removal and combat eutrophication,

  • The benefits of sediment re-oxygenation for ecosystem recovery,

  • The role of groundwater discharges as a hidden driver of nutrient pollution,

  • The reintroduction of native fish species to restore biodiversity,

  • The critical issue of small wastewater treatment plants, particularly along the Polish coast,

  • The urgent need to recultivate coastal lakes and lagoons.

These dialogues have sparked promising new partnerships and project concepts that aim to align environmental restoration with sustainable business engagement in the Baltic Sea region.
