Fish: Bream from the Baltic Sea now ‘Green-Lighted’ by WWF

We are pleased to report that bream from the Baltic Sea has now been given a 'green light' in the WWF Sustainable Seafood Guide 2023. This achievement is due, in part, to the Baltic Fish project launched by John Nurminen Foundation in collaboration with Race For The Baltic in 2019. And the project owes its success, in large part, to the engagement of coastal fishermen and broad collaboration between the private sector, authorities, research, and NGOs. Thanks to these efforts, the knowledge and data on the stock have increased significantly. This new guidance marks an important milestone on the path to creating conditions for sustainable commercial fishing of bream—an underutilized fish species.

"This is proof that our thoughts and approach to bream management is sustainable," says Örjan Östman, a fish researcher at SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Aqua.

"We are immensely proud that Baltic Sea bream has been green-listed. Bream is a natural choice as a food fish, and we remain committed to strengthening the image of bream as a delicious and nutritious local source of protein," says Emma Margareta Gabrielsson, Deputy CEO at Guldhaven Pelagiska, (who led Race For The Baltic’s work on this initiative as a project manager in 2019).

We extend our gratitude to all partners in the #BalticFish project: Guldhaven Pelagiska, John Nurmisen Säätiö, Nordic Investment Bank, Nefco - the Nordic Green Bank, Ålands Fiskare R.F, Gutefisk, and Rädda Lumparn.
